Distribution – Native of Malaysia imported to India. Cultivated as hedge plant throughout India
PLANT DESCRIPTION
A perennial dense foliaged evergreen shrub grows up to 2 meters in height. Leaves simple, alternate, lanceolate, acute, with grayish mark on upper side. Flowers greenish, arises from the leaf axils. Fruits greenish white, globose with 4 distinct chambers. Each chamber bears single angular seed.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
This plant is used widely as a vegetable. Recent studies reveal that the plant contains a toxic alkaloid that may affect the lung causing Rapid progressive lung disease. This plant is not mentioned in ayurvedic classics.
